Lubricant is any solution whether it is oil or water based that provides aid to increase motion and cot down friction that can be considered a lubricant. It can simply be just plain water.

Everyone at some point in time is going to need a lubricant and for some sexual activities it is an absolute must. For women, there are times that the body just does not generate enough vaginal fluid and many things can affect this - time of the month, stress, recent child birth, antihistamines, decongestants, menopause, antidepressants, antihypertensive and cardiac agents. All this contribute to the cause of vaginal dryness. For those who are using adult toys, the use of lubricant is necessary for sexual toys and made from dry materials. Without lubricants, sexual intercourse can become damaging to the persons engaging in sex. There is also no reason to cause any discomfort while using lubricant or after sexual intercourse. However some lubricants don't work as well as the others.

As mentioned there are two types of lubricants, oil base and water base. Oil base lubricant have been popular for the long time. Products such as baby oil and Vaseline and petroleum based. The main trouble is that they leave a coating on the vaginal wall that is very hard to get rid of- thus increasing the chance of bacteria and other forms of infection. Another problem that might occur is, an oil based lubricants contain chemicals that can break down and destroy latex condom, dental dams, gloves, diaphragms, cervical caps, sponges, as well as the protective coatings around some IUDs and any sexual device made of latex. These also apply to body lotions because they are absorbed by the body fast and thus those who are using is should know its limitations.

Water based lubricants are better than oil based. They are especially formulated so that is becomes non-irritating to the skin and the vaginal surface. Once again, buying a lubricant is going to come down to personal preference- some provide light lubrication and some heavy lubrication. Water-based lubes use two main ingredients: Water and Glycerin. Since the main ingredient is water, water-based lubes do tend to dry up quickly during the intercourse. Another point to consider in buying lubes is that if it is flavored make sure that the lubricant does not contain sugar for sugar cause infection inside the vaginal track. Water-based lubricants however, can easily be removed with soap and water.
