Forearm Crutch Home Medical Supply
Forearm crutches have 2 points of contact in the body for better stability. Axillary and non-axillary are currently in use. An axillary crutch is a type of orthosis that provides support from the axilla to the floor. Wood and aluminum axillary crutches are available, both of which are adjustable. The extension crutch is heavier than the regular crutch because of the extra piece of wood. Standard axillary crutches have double uprights with a shoulder piece and handgrip or bar. Nonaxillary crutches allow transfer of 40-50% of the patient's body weight. Also called forearm or arm canes or forearm or arm orthoses, these devices require good trunk control. The patient needs confidence in his/her ambulation skills.

The difference between canes and crutches is the point of weight bearing. Forearm crutches allow some of the weight to be borne by the shoulders and the wrists. There are common types of crutches where weight can be supported by the upper body, just below the armpits, the arms, or both. The forearm crutch was designed originally by a particular person and transferred to our research team in order to make it an affordable and reliable product. This is an example of technology transfer from personal research to the private sector.

Our company's forearm crutch has a streamlined appearance and allows the client to use his hands without dropping the crutches. Unlike normal underarm crutches these crutches do not put unvarying pressure on the underarm. Constant pressure under the arm can cause nerve damage and result in a serious medical condition. Forearm crutches are more appropriate for people with long-term needs; the crutch features a flexible cuff that surrounds the forearm just below the elbow, helping to reduce arm strain. Cuffs that adjust in length above the handgrip afford the most comfort.

Our forearm crutch is a high technology crutch with important new features. It can stand alone for convenience and has an uttered foot like a human foot for increased traction and security. It contains both a shock absorber which makes its use gentler on the users' hand, and it is spring loaded, enabling the crutch to stand erect while unsupported. This provides convenience found in the current three and four legged canes which have become quite popular. Unlike all other stand alone crutches however, our product has a large uttered surface contact area which maintains surface contact throughout its use, thereby affording greater surface gripping and support for the user. It is also lighter than other forearm crutch. Despite these additional features, it is price competitive with existing crutches.
